There are cultural and infrastructural obstacles associated with studying abroad in West Africa. Traveling in West Africa is for the rugged traveler; consequently, students need to develop a bond prior to travel. The constant overlapping of traditional and modern aspects of African culture in conjunction with economic problems can create several unforseen circumstances. There may exist rough driving conditions, regular electricity and water shortages, halted travel resulting from washed out bridges and roads, and airplanes may be delayed several days without notice. Most Americans' temperaments are not conducive to these daily occurences in West African life. Thus the African Culturual Continuities Protocal Workshop was developed to assist the African student traveler.
