What is African Cultural Continuities?
A program in Black American Studies at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, designed to introduce students to the similarities and differences in the cultures in Africa and within the African Diaspora. Students participate in traditional festivals and ceremonies, and live with families in order to learn about the connections between cultures. In addition, students conduct comparative research in their area of interest. Students also participate in serve learning projects, for example, in 1998, students planted palm-oil trees in a village near Kumasi. In 1999, students conducted a census project and built a gari processing center in the village of Sanka, near Elmina, Ghana, West Africa.

Can I get credit for the program?
Yes, students can receive from three to six credits, graduate or undergraduate in Black American Studies.

Cost will vary depending on the destination. However, you may be eligible for financial aid through your University.
